eBay Best Offer Strategy for Sellers
Set your lowest acceptable price before an offer arrives. Then compare each offer with that floor, current sold prices, and how quickly you want to free the inventory cash.
How should sellers evaluate an eBay Best Offer?
Calculate the net amount you need from the sale, then account for the fees and expenses that apply to that listing. Accept offers that meet your target, counter offers between your target and floor, and decline offers below your floor. A percentage discount alone cannot tell you whether a sale is profitable.
First check recent sold listings for the same item and condition in the eBay sold-comps pricing guide. A buyer's offer is useful market feedback, but it does not replace your cost calculation.
Worked example: calculate an offer floor
Suppose you paid $24 for an item, expect to spend $8 on shipping and $2 on packing, and want at least $10 profit. For this simplified example only, assume a 13% variable selling-fee rate applied to the offer price, with no other fees or advertising costs.
Minimum offer = (item cost + shipping + packing + target profit) ÷ (1 − assumed fee rate)
($24 + $8 + $2 + $10) ÷ (1 − 0.13) = $44 ÷ 0.87 = $50.57. At $50.57, the assumed fee is about $6.57; after the $34 in costs and that fee, about $10 remains.
This is an illustrative calculation, not eBay's current fee schedule. Actual fees depend on category, format, account, optional services, and the order total used for the fee calculation. Replace the example rate with the current rate and fee basis for your listing, and include promoted-listing charges or other costs when they apply. eBay's selling-fees page explains why there is no single rate for every seller.
For this example, the $50.57 figure is the target floor if $10 profit is non-negotiable. If you would accept $7 profit to move older stock, recalculate the floor with $7. You can check your broader item economics with the profit margin calculator.
When should you accept, counter, or decline?
Accept when the offer clears your floor and fits your current plan for the item. Counter when it is close enough to keep negotiating but below your preferred target. Decline when it would miss your minimum or when the gap is too large to justify another exchange.
- At or above target: accept if the sold-comps range, fees, and inventory plan support it.
- Between floor and target: counter at a number you would actually take. Do not assume the buyer will meet you halfway.
- Below floor: decline, or revisit your assumptions before changing the floor. Do not lower it just because an offer arrived.
Listing age and demand can affect how much patience makes sense, but they do not change the arithmetic. A new listing with comparable sales near your ask may deserve time; an older listing with weaker recent comps may justify a lower target. Treat that as a business choice and record the reason.
How do eBay's offer settings work?
On eligible listings, eBay lets sellers set a minimum offer and an optional automatic-accept amount. Offers below the lower setting can be declined automatically, offers at or above the upper setting can be accepted, and offers between them can be reviewed manually. Availability and some rules vary by category and listing settings, so check the controls shown for your item.
eBay says sellers generally have 24 hours to accept, decline, or counter a buyer's Best Offer. A seller counteroffer is below the Buy It Now price and above the buyer's offer; it expires after 96 hours. See the current eBay Best Offer instructions before setting rules, especially if the listing is promoted or has special terms.
Set the auto-decline threshold no higher than the lowest amount you are comfortable considering, and set auto-accept only at a price you are happy to take without reviewing it. If you need to inspect shipping, advertising, or buyer terms first, leave the offer for manual review. You can also compare Best Offer with seller-sent offers; they are different tools.
Use this pre-listing checklist
Before turning on Best Offer, write down the numbers and limits you will use. That makes a later decision faster and keeps a tired moment from setting your price.
- Check comparable sold items in similar condition.
- List your item cost, shipping, packing, platform fees, advertising, and other sale costs.
- Choose the minimum profit you are willing to accept and calculate the matching offer floor.
- Choose a higher target if you want room to counter.
- Set auto thresholds only where they match your actual floor and target; otherwise review offers manually.
- After a sale, record the accepted price and net profit so future thresholds use your own results.
