How to Revise an eBay Listing

RapidResell AI · Published October 25, 2026

Open the active listing in Seller Hub or My eBay, choose Edit or Revise, make the allowed changes, then submit the revision. What you can change depends on the listing format, auction bids and time remaining, completed purchases, and whether an offer is active.

This guide covers eBay.com listing rules checked October 25, 2026. eBay can change the interface or restrict individual listings, so use the fields available in your account as the final check.

How do you revise an active eBay listing?

In My eBay, open Selling Activity, find the item, and choose Revise from More actions. In Seller Hub, open Active listings, select the item, and choose Edit; make your changes and submit with Revise it.

  1. Open the listing from Active listings or Selling Activity.
  2. Choose Revise or Edit.
  3. Make only the changes eBay offers for that listing.
  4. Review the complete listing and any optional feature or fee shown.
  5. Submit the revision and reopen the listing to confirm the intended fields were saved.

For a batch change, Seller Hub lets you select multiple active listings and use the Edit menu. Check each item afterward because a bulk edit can apply the same field change to every selected listing.

What can you change when you revise a listing?

Many ordinary edits are allowed, but the rules change with format and activity. Use this table as a first check; eBay’s current revise-listing rules list the full field-by-field limits.

Listing situationTypical allowed changesCommon limits
Fixed price, no purchasesTitle, photos, price reduction, quantity, shipping details, category, and adding or removing a variation option.eBay says you cannot edit the details of existing variations. Adding optional upgrades may cost extra.
Fixed price, at least one purchaseTitle, price reduction, quantity, categories, shipping details, description additions, and some variation changes.Existing variation details still cannot be edited. A buyer who already purchased keeps the original shipping charge.
Auction, more than 12 hours left, no bidsTitle, photos, shipping options, some optional upgrades, and a lower starting price. You generally cannot change the listing format. Reducing the starting price does not refund an insertion-fee difference.
Auction with bids, or close to endingSome additions may remain available—for example, photos or optional upgrades under specific bid and time conditions.Price, duration, description, and shipping edits are restricted; the exact allowed fields depend on bids and time remaining.
An offer was sent or receivedSome limited changes, such as available quantity or adding a shipping option, may be offered.Changing item specifics, existing shipping details, or the existing description is restricted while the offer is active.

The matrix is a summary, not a guarantee that every field is editable in every listing. For auctions, check both whether there are bids and whether more or less than 12 hours remain. For fixed-price listings, check purchase history and variation status before changing the item.

Can you change the price of an eBay listing?

You can generally lower the price on a fixed-price listing. For an auction, lowering the starting price is generally allowed only when more than 12 hours remain and there are no bids; once bids exist or the auction is close to ending, eBay restricts price changes.

When an auction's starting price is reduced, eBay says it does not refund any difference in insertion fees. Before making a price change, confirm whether you are editing the current listing or choosing a separate action such as ending and relisting it. The options shown in your listing are the relevant eligibility check.

Why can't you revise an eBay listing?

The field may be locked because of the listing format or recent activity: auction bids and time remaining, purchases on a fixed-price listing, an active offer, or a variation field can all limit edits. A listing that has ended also cannot be revised as an active listing.

  • Auction: Check bids and time remaining; eBay limits price, description, and shipping changes in some cases.
  • Offer active: Wait for the offer to expire or resolve if the blocked field is one eBay restricts while an offer is sent or received.
  • Variation details: eBay distinguishes changing available quantity from editing the existing option details. See our guide to changing eBay listing quantity.
  • Different item: Create a new listing instead of changing an existing listing into a different product.
  • Ended listing: Review eBay's relisting guidance to see whether relisting is available.

Does it cost money to revise an eBay listing?

eBay says there is no fee to revise a listing unless you add a special feature. Review any price or fee displayed before submitting: optional upgrades and some category changes can involve charges, and fee rules can vary by listing and account.

eBay also notes that removing an optional upgrade does not necessarily refund the fee already paid for it. If you are deciding whether a promotion or upgrade is worth adding, estimate the margin first with the seller profit and margin calculator.

What should you check before submitting a revision?

Confirm that the saved listing still describes the exact item and terms you intend to sell. A quick review of price, quantity, photos, shipping, and buyer-visible details helps catch an edit that changed more than you meant to change.

  1. Confirm the item, variation, and sellable quantity.
  2. Compare the new price and shipping terms with your intended total.
  3. Check photos, title, condition, and description for consistency.
  4. Look for optional upgrades and any fee shown before submission.
  5. After saving, reopen the live listing and verify the changed fields.
